Every year in the United States, obesity, unhealthy eating and physical inactivity account for more than 300,000 preventable deaths from chronic diseases such as heart disease, stroke, cancer and diabetes. According to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, in 1999, 13% of children aged 6 to 11 years and 14% of adolescents aged 12 to 19 years in the United States were overweight. Based upon these eye-opening statistics we were ecstatic to learn that Boys & Girls Clubs of Acadiana was awarded a $15,000 grant to implement the “Wanna Play” program. The “Wanna Play” program features a variety of fun and engaging activities to help youth improve their fitness; increase awareness of good nutrition and hydration; learn basic baseball skills; and developed lifelong appreciation of the game of baseball.
