Wal-Mart Foundation

Boys & Girls Clubs of Acadiana is the recipient of a $50,000 grant from the Wal-Mart Foundation to implement its Date SMART program. The Date SMART curriculum was developed by Boys & Girls Club of America in response to the increase seen in teen dating violence. The program is intended increase young people’s understanding and build the skills they need to achieve healthy relationships free of violence and abuse. By participating in a “Date SMART” group, young people have a unique opportunity to learn essential information about dating and relationships, while exploring their own thinking and feelings about these topics. The program consists of ten sessions involving classroom presentations and group discussions and role playing, supplemented by presentations by outside guest speakers. This program is currently being delivered on a weekly basis, along with additional Club programs in education, health fitness, arts and more, all designed to enhance teens’ overall self-esteem. Date SMART will be implemented throughout three ten-week program phases in summer 2010, fall 2010 and spring 2010.
