2012 Event Recap!

Zydeco Concert & Home Run Derby

The Home Run Derby-Opelousas

This was a great year for the Zydeco Concert and Home Run Derby. The Zydeco concert kicked off the Home Run Derby with The Joel Martin Project and Lil Wayne and Same Ol 2 Step. Chief Perry Gallow was the creator of this event and has done a great job with maintaining it. He is a former UL baseball player and really great at hitting home runs. This was a competition to see how many home runs the participants could hit and they had to hit more than Chief Gallow to win the trophy. Last year we started a kids competition to happen right before the adult competition. These events were enjoyed by everyone. We had 2 UL Softball Players as guests their to sign autographs at the Home Run Derby. This was a neat idea because the kids were excited to get to meet some of the players they look up to in the Baseball/Softball world. We had approximately 30 adult participants and 25 children.

Celebrity Waiter Dinner\

The Celebrity Waiter Dinner-Abbeville

Celebrity Waiter was once again a huge success and draws prominent people within Vermilion Parish. The night included a steak dinner, which was brought to tables by area celebrities, and the night ended with an auction. Some of the celebrities waiters and special guests were Sheriff Mike Couvillion, Kevin Kaminski (Ice Gators Head Coach), Josh Dupalntis (Ice Gators Player), Mallory Cox (Ms. Lafayette), Jaryd Lane (Locally Known Singer), Michael Dupre (Channel 10 Anchor) and Jaycee Falcon (99.9 KTDY DJ). This year for the first time we had LOL Photeaux at the event. This idea had a very warm welcome. People loved the idea that they could get their picture taken with their spouse or friends and then within a minute get a copy of the picture to take home with them. This is something we plan on continuing in years to come. We sold out of an estimated 300 seats. Sheriff Couvillion always makes a great auctioneer. He always does a great job getting guests to bid on the wonderful auction items donated to the event.

Steak & Burger Dinner

The Steak & Burger Dinner-Lafayette

The Steak & Burger Sponsor Party was held at Carrabba’s Italian Grill and was the kick off for the Steak & Burger Dinner, which was held soon after. The Sponsor Party had the biggest attendance that we have had in years. The Steak & Burger Dinner was very unique this year and brought a huge crowd of 700. The guests for this event were accompanied by many of our wonderful Club kids. They also had the opportunity to watch some of the Club kids perform for them. This was the second event of the year that we had LOL Photeaux attend. Jake Delhomme was our guest speaker of the night and he also stood in the front greeting people and taking pictures with people through the LOL Photeaux area. Fans of Jake were excited to get to take their picture home. Lamar Narcisse, a Boys & Girls Club Alumni was our host. He did a wonderful job and touched a lot of hearts.

Brudley’s Wild Game Cook-Off

The Brudley’s Wild Game Cook-Off-New Iberia

This was the 10th Annual Brudley’s Wild Game Cook-Off. This event was named after Brudley Kibodeaux who was a leader in the Iberia area and on the Boys & girls Clubs Board. He was hit by a drunk driver and this event was names after him for his dedication to our Club kids.  This year it was not what some people expected. Many people thought they were just coming to listen to music and try some great food made by cooking teams from all over. Little did they know we had LOL Photeaux there ready to take pictures of everyone with “The Original Swamp People”, The Klieberts and a live alligator. It was  something people really enjoyed and a keep sake to take home with them. In 2011 we started an Exotic Animal Exhibit and this is something that has been popular with the kids, along with an opportunity to get their face painted. We had approximately 14 cooking teams this year that cooked a total of 45 dishes.

The Great Acadiana Running of the Ducks

The Great Acadiana Running of the Ducks-Lafayette

The Great Acadiana Running of the Ducks is always one of the largest fundraising events that The Boys & Girls Clubs put on. We always have a huge kickoff party a couple weeks before, where we have music, food and a whole lot of fun.  Many people within the community came together in 2012 to make sure this event was nothing less than perfect. We had many new sales locations and prizes. People were able to buy $5 ducks until the end of the sales period and we had our huge event at Red’s to finish it up. This year we had about 25,000 ducks take the plunge and about $25,000 of prizes were given away. The Josh Taylor Band played at this event and had 2 special guests, Ice Gators Coach Kaminski and The University of Louisiana at Lafayette’s Coach Hudspeth.

News

The Boys and Girls Club has a lot of games that I like to play. Some of my favorite activities are football and basketball. I love all of the workers and I like to help the staff with their activities. I also do better in school because they check my homework and I also get extra help with my math. LeShane Gauge
